What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dental Visit
An Essential Guide for Parents to Begin Their Child’s Oral Care Path Effortlessly

When Should My Child’s First Visit Be?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday — or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Starting early helps build a positive relationship with dental care, allows us to monitor proper development, and establishes a safe, trusted “dental home” for your child from the start.
What Happens During the Visit?
First visits are gentle, low-pressure, and designed with little ones in mind. Here’s what you can typically expect:
- A warm welcome — Our team is trained to make children feel comfortable and at ease from the moment they walk in.
- A gentle oral exam — Dr. Haffner will carefully examine your child’s teeth, gums, jaw, and bite for any early signs of concern.
- Early detection — We look for signs of tooth decay, developmental issues, and anything that may need monitoring over time.
- Parent education — We’ll walk you through proper brushing techniques, diet habits, and what to watch for at home as your child grows.
- No surprises — Everything is explained in a calm, age-appropriate way so your child knows what to expect every step of the way.
For most infants and toddlers, the first visit is quick and comfortable. The goal is simply to get your child familiar with the environment and give you the information you need to set them up for lifelong oral health.
Who Is Dr. Haffner?
Dr. Christy Haffner is a board-eligible Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (FAAPD) with advanced post-doctoral training specifically in pediatric dentistry. She holds a Georgia conscious sedation permit, is certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and can provide IV Sedation (in office) — a level of service that speaks directly to her commitment to your child’s safety and care.
l Her approach is warm, patient, and genuinely child-centered. She understands that every child is different — and takes the time to meet each one where they are.
What Makes Our Office Different?
We’ve designed our practice specifically for kids — because a dental office built for adults simply isn’t the right environment for a child.
- A dedicated kids’ wing — A bright, welcoming space built for our youngest patients, making the visit feel less clinical and more comfortable.
- A state-of-the-art teen wing — Older kids and teens get their own dedicated space too, because a 15-year-old shouldn’t feel like they’re in a waiting room designed for toddlers.
- Age-appropriate care at every stage — From infants to young adults, everything about our practice is tailored to where your child is developmentally.
Tips to Prepare Your Child for Their First Visit
A little preparation goes a long way. Here are a few things you can do before the appointment:
- Talk about it positively — Avoid words like “hurt,” “shot,” or “scary.” Instead, frame it as a fun trip to meet a doctor who counts teeth!
- Read a book or watch a video — There are great children’s books about first dental visits that can help demystify the experience.
- Play pretend dentist at home — Let your child “check” your teeth and then check theirs. Familiarity reduces anxiety.
- Schedule at a good time — Book the appointment when your child is typically rested and in a good mood — avoid nap time or right before a meal.
- Bring a comfort item — A favorite stuffed animal or blanket is always welcome.
